In 2007, New Hampshire joined the growing group of states that can hold the most dangerous sex offenders past the end of their sentences in what is known as a “civil commitment.”  This notion has been controversial, pitting concerns over public safety against the rights of offenders. And some in New Hampshire say the state’s law has some worrisome flaws.

Prosecutors say they now have a clearer picture of what happened to University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth Marriott, who has been missing and presumed dead last October.

Police arrested a man from Dover, Seth Mazzaglia, shortly after Marriott went missing, but it wasn’t until the last few days that a grand jury formally indicted Mazzaglia on a series of charges, including first and second degree murder.

In 2009, Governor Lynch signed a law making it illegal to drop out before the age of eighteen. Last month, state officials touted a report ranking the state among those with the lowest dropout rates. But all is not rosy. There are certain areas where that number is a lot higher, especially in Manchester. We’ll look at what’s working and what’s not for our dropout rate.

  Last week the UNH Survey Center released the latest findings of the Granite State Poll. The Survey Center has been following a number of issues recently, the most high profile of which is whether or not there’s public support in New Hampshire for a proposed casino.

The Survey Center has also been part of a project looking at public attitudes about climate change – namely, why there’s a consensus among scientists – but not the public - that global warming is happening and caused by human activity.
