All Eyes On Afghanistan: Elections, The Taliban, And The U.S. Military Drawdown

The results of this weekend’s elections, many say, will have enormous consequences for the country’s future - from the status of ongoing U.S. military support, to whether recent civil rights gains are maintained.  But the balloting has been marred by violence, and deep-seated concerns about fraud.

  • Bob Cassidy –an Army Colonel and a military professor the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.   He has served across the Middle East and in Afghanistan, most recently in Afghanistan from 2013-2014 as a special assistant to the operational commander.  His last book, “War, Will, and Warlords” (2012), explored the insurgencies in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • John Carey chair of the Department of Government at Dartmouth College. He teaches and does research on comparative politics, specializing in constitutions, elections, and the design of new democratic institutions. He traveled to Afghanistan in 2012 with the U.S. State Department to consult on electoral reform there.
  • Sarwar Kashmeri - adjunct professor at Norwich University and Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association. He is the author of "NATO 2.0; Reboot or Delete.”  At Norwich he focuses on U.S. Grand Strategy & Military Force Realignment.
