Joint House Committee OKs 4.2 Cent Gas Tax Hike

A joint House committee has approved the first increase to the state’s gas tax in more than two decades.

Members of the joint Public Works and Ways and Means committee voted 26-11 Tuesday to recommend passing the 4.2 cent increase.

The proposal now goes before the full House next week.

The bill has already cleared the Senate and has the support of Governor Maggie Hassan.

If passed, it would take effect July first.

The increase from 18 cents to 22.2 cents a gallon is expected to generate another $32 million in annual revenue, funding that would go toward repairing the state’s roads and bridges.
