'Paycheck Fairness' Advocates Rally As Bill Moves To House

NHPR / Michael Brindley

After gaining unanimous support in the state Senate, a bill that aims to bring pay for women in line with their male co-workers went before the House labor committee earlier today.

Prior to the hearing, Governor Maggie Hassan joined supporters of the so-called Paycheck Fairness Act at a press conference.

Hassan says ensuring that all Granite Staters are paid equally, regardless of gender, is good for the state’s economy.

“By eliminating loopholes, increasing transparency in wages, and ensuring that all workers have the appropriate tools and resources to help them earn a fair and equal paycheck.”

Supporters cite U.S. Census data which shows that in 2012, women working full-time in New Hampshire earned 77 cents on the dollar when compared to men.

The bill seeks to protect the rights of employees to discuss wage information with co-workers and to strengthen non-retaliation laws for workers who file discrimination claims.

New Hampshire’s version of the bill comes as President Obama is set to sign two executive orders today on equal pay for women.
