Think about how anti-gay marriage rhetoric played a critical role in George W. Bush’s re-election in 2004, or how talking up a surging economy made Bill Clinton the first two-term democratic president since Franklin Roosevelt won in 1936.

Dear EarthTalk: Given that the presidential election is just around the corner, what can you tell me about each candidate’s environmental track record and positions?

-- Jane Miller, Chicago, IL

Just because the environment is getting short shrift this election season due to our nation’s lingering economic woes doesn’t mean that candidates Obama and Romney can ignore the issue.

The Art of Losing a Campaign

Walt McDougall, New York World, Oct. 30, 1884.

Mitt Romney’s campaign is trying to contain blow back from a secretly recorded video at a $50,000-a-plate fundraiser. With less than fifty days until the election, Romney’s leaked comments, in which he dismisses 47% of the country as “dependent on government,” is dominating political coverage at a time when Romney is already down in the polls. It may be little relief to Romney staffers to know that there is an historical precedent to this media debacle.

Ryan didn’t address Romney’s comments directly during a town hall meeting in Dover, but he did attempt to clarify where he and Romney stand on what they say are the failures of the Obama administration.

Mitt Romney is off the campaign trail this week. He’s vacationing at his home in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, but the Republican presidential candidate is set to march in the town’s 4th of July parade.

And that’s likely to bring more attention than usual to Wolfeboro and its festivities this Independence Day.

Grand Marshal Harold Chamberlin has organized Wolfeboro’s 4th of July parade for 17 years. He tells All Things Considered host Brady Carlson about the parade and whether Romney's participation means any changes to his work.
